New Physician Brings Fresh Energy to Big Lake

Dr. Zhen Lu joins Reagan Hospital With a Passion for Rural Care and a Focus on Long-term Community Relationships

The Reagan Hospital District is proud to welcome Dr. Zhen Lu as its newest physician, bringing with him a wealth of training, a heart for rural care, and a deep desire to build lasting relationships with patients and the community. He will eventually take over the role currently held by Dr. Joseph Sudolcan, who is preparing for retirement after years of dedicated service.

Dr. Lu recently completed his family medicine residency at Western Kentucky, capping off a training path that included time at Johns Hopkins University for medical school, general surgery rotations at Parkland Hospital in Dallas and in Philadelphia, and a research fellowship. Originally from Houston, Dr. Lu says he’s glad to be back in Texas.

“I’ve always felt there’s more satisfaction in practicing medicine in rural areas,” Dr. Lu said. “The pace of life is different, and the relationships are deeper. When I visited Big Lake, I saw a community that truly cares about its hospital as if it’s their own backyard.”

That sense of ownership and investment is exactly what attracted Dr. Lu to the Reagan Hospital District. Unlike larger corporate health systems where physicians are often forced to rush through patient visits, Dr. Lu said he appreciates the opportunity to provide thorough, meaningful care without being rushed.

“There may not be all the bells and whistles of a large facility here, but the time we have with patients allows for a level of care that’s often missing in big-city hospitals,” he said.

Hospital CEO Jonathon Voelkel agrees, calling Dr. Lu “a breath of fresh air” who brings the latest best practices from his training and a genuine eagerness to serve.

“He’s easy to talk to, engaging, and already excited to learn about the people and culture here... whether it’s the oilfield, local hunting, or just being a part of the community,” Voelkel said. “I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised when they meet him.”

Dr. Lu said he doesn’t view Big Lake as a stepping stone.

“If everything works out, I don’t see any reason to leave,” he said. “Professionally, I’d love to serve a community long enough to watch patients grow, have families, and return with their kids. That kind of continuity is special.”

Outside of medicine, Dr. Lu enjoys staying active, playing golf, and recently took up archery with a compound bow. While not a hunter yet, he says the idea of hunting with a bow intrigues him. “There’s something romantic about it—the patience, the balance, the coordination,” he said with a smile.

Dr. Lu joins the current team of Reagan Hospital District providers, including:
Olivia King, FNP-C
Michael A. Ross, PA-C
James S. Williams, MD
Joseph Sudolcan, MD (retiring soon)

Each can be reached through the hospital’s main line at 325-884-3743.

Dr. Lu encouraged residents to stop by and say hello. “We’re kind of tucked behind the fire station in one of those houses,” he said. “I’m still exploring the town, but everyone’s been so welcoming already.”

With Dr. Lu’s addition, the Reagan Hospital District continues to build on its mission of providing high-quality, compassionate care to Big Lake and surrounding communities.
