Reagan County officials take different stances on same-sex marriage ruling
“I respect the Supreme Court’s decision and same-sex couple’s right to get married. I hope that everyone respects my right to not officiate a ceremony that goes against my beliefs.” Larry Isom - County Judge, Reagan County
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton released a written opinion Sunday addressing last week’s Supreme Court ruling that legalized same-sex marriages in all 50 states.
Paxton’s opinion states that county clerks may refuse to issue marriage licenses if they have a religious objection to doing so.
The opinion also stated that justices of the peace and county judges can also refuse to perform same-sex weddings if it goes against their religious beliefs.
