A Houston man was struck and killed by a vehicle last Thursday some 10 miles East of Big Lake on US 67. The man was identified as Christopher Walls, 46 of Houston. He was pronounced dead at the scene by Reagan County Justice of the Peace Patty Davenport.

Reagan County Fire/EMS was busy last Thursday a tank battery fire and the pedestrian fatality. The tank battery fire was sparked by a storm that pushed through the Big Lake area at around 5 p.m.

The 7th Annual Santa Rita Star Spangled Celebration was great! Sheriff Jeff Garner estimated 8,000 people came out to Reagan County North Park on July 2, 2022 to help Big Lake, Texas celebrate our country’s freedom.

The Sheep & Goat Predator Management Board (S&GPMB) is busy preparing for another bi-ennial election to elect one director from each of their three districts.  Directors whose terms expire in 2022 are: Will M. Black from District One, Jason Bannowsky from District Two, and Robin Giles from District Three.

Porfirio Ortiz, 80 of Big Lake, was arrested and charged with two counts of Capital Murder - Multiple Persons on Wednesday, May 18th. Capital Murder charges carry with them a mandatory life sentence without parole if convicted. The charges stem from a 9-1-1 call the Reagan County Sheriff’s Department received at 3:57 p.m. last Wednesday.

Reagan County Coach Tracy Tatum-Smith (Coach T) was inducted into the Reagan County ISD Hall of Honor last Thursday during Reagan County High School’s Sports Banquet. Coach T has cultivated an exemplary tennis program at Reagan County and touched countless lives since joining the district in 1990.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, both Texas and New Mexico rank in the bottom 25th percentile in literacy nationally, with several Permian Basin counties ranking near the bottom of state averages. Through the generous support of the Abell-Hanger Foundation, FMH Foundation, Permian Strategic Partnership, and the Brown Family Foundation; The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin (LCPB) was founded in 2021 to address the literacy challenges prevalent in the Permian Basin, which includes nineteen counties in Texas and three in New Mexico, with the mission to increase the literacy levels and skills of all people in the Permian Basin improving their quality of life.

Christian DeLuna graduated as the Salutatorian of the Reagan County High School Class of 2022. He is the son of Victoria Garcia and Jaime DeLuna. He  received a total of $9,000 in scholarships. Below is his address to the Class of 2022:

Representative Drew Darby (San Angelo) received the Bob Bullock Award for Outstanding Public Service at the Texas Digital Government Summit in Austin. Government Technology presents the Bob Bullock Award each year to a Texas executive or elected official who exemplifies outstanding leadership, innovation, and dedication to serving Texas citizens. Bob Bullock served as Texas Comptroller from 1975 to 1991 and Texas Lieutenant Governor from 1991 until 1999.

 The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service (FNS) announced Sunday, June 5, 2022, that it will interpret the prohibition on discrimination based on sex found in Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, and in the Food and Nutrition Act of 2008, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), formerly the Food Stamp Program, to include discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

Reagan County Elementary School is proud to announce the 2022 Teacher of the Year, our amazing music teacher, Mrs. Karen Dorsey. Mrs. Dorsey started sharing her love of music long before she started teaching at Reagan County Elementary School.

Texas A&M Forest Service is now accepting grant applications for the State Fire Assistance for Mitigation – Plains Prescribed Fire Grant through August 15, 2022. Prescribed fire is the planned application of a low-intensity fire to the landscape by fire and fuel specialist. The practice is a strategic, planned land management tool that uses fire to achieve set goals and are planned in accordance with applicable laws, policies and regulations.

The City of Big Lake would like to remind everyone that it is illegal to use fireworks within the City Limits. That includes any firework that is larger than a blank for a cap gun. There will be no warnings this year. All violators caught using fireworks within the City Limits will receive a citation.

Big Lake Author Scott Myers will host a book release next Thursday, June 23, at the First Baptist Church’s Fellowship Hall. The event, which begins at 7 p.m., will feature Myers reading a passage from his new book, ‘Not My Will.’
