Humorist Dr. Don Newbury to Speak at BLEDC Business Appreciation Dinner September 26th

Tuesday, September 26th at 6 pm promises to be a special evening for local businesses in Big Lake as they gather for the second Annual Business Appreciation Dinner sponsored by the Big Lake Economic Development in the Reagan County Community Center.

Special speaker will be a rural Texas native, Dr. Don Newbury. Dr. Newbury is always “at home with people,” whether addressing small audiences in remote areas, or in the nation’s largest urban settings.  He champions the work ethic, getting his first “paying job” in the summer of age 14.  He sold snow cones for a nickel in a Brownwood gun ship, “cashiering” for the quadriplegic owner to pay for the space.  (The sign out front, ”HANDGUNS AND SNOW CONES,” seemed as incongruous as the sign at a lakeside store featuring “HOT DOUGHNUTS AND FISHING WORMS”.)

During his 40 years in higher education, Dr. Newbury spent almost half of his career in presidencies, including Western Texas College in Snyder and at Howard Payne University in Brownwood.  The year 2017 marked his 57th year as a platform personality.

Students refer to him as the “popcorn president,” since he has popped and given away more than 24 tons of popcorn on his back porch.  They have known that “when the porch light’s on,” that Dr. Newbury is giving away popcorn.  Thus the inspiration for the title of his first book… When the Porch Light’s On…Stories of People, Popcorn and Parasails. He has whiled away hundreds of evening sharing the popcorn with students, and other visitors, at his home. Dr. Newbury has published books annually, including Life by the Seat of the Pants, A few Geese Short of a Gaggle, Stories from the Sunny Side, Funnier Than Fiction, A Wheelbarrow Guy in a Digital World, Honk! If You’re Sick of Political Ads, As the World Churns and Life with If in the Middle.

Dr. Newbury’s weekly column of humor and inspiration now appears in about 150 Texas newspapers and is heard on selected radio stations.  The Idle American is now in its eighth year of syndication.
The BLEDC will be showcasing businesses that have received Business Grants, Advertising & Promotion Grants and Beautification Grants.  EDC’s are charged with generating economic growth, creating better jobs for residents and facilitating an improved quality of life within their community.

The Industry remains as complex, challenging and rewarding as ever. The event provides business to business networking and an opportunity to celebrate milestones for local business.
“We are indebted to the businesses for the difference they make in our community”, stated Gloria Baggett, EDC Director.  “We are excited about what is happening in big Lake and supporting the businesses in Big Lake is an important part of creating a thriving community.”

The community is invited to attend the complimentary dinner and program.

However, if planning to do so, please call Gloria Baggett at 884-2288 for reservations and knowledge of food preparation amounts by September 21. The meal is to be catered by local restaurant, Sugar Creek Grill.
