The Big Lake Chamber of Commerce is excited to announce the Santa Rita Star Spangled Celebration will be held on Saturday, July 1st at Reagan County’s North Park featuring Stoney LaRue, Jon Wolfe and Polo Urias.
The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) Criminal Investigations Division (CID) assisted in a multi-agency, two-day child exploitation operation on February 24-25 that led to the arrest of nine individuals.
Reagan County’s Library has received a face-lift thanks to a grant from the Ladd and Katherine Hancher Library Foundation. The $40,000 grant allowed the library to install new bookshelves in the children’s area, new seating throughout the library, and two interactive tables filled with games for children and adults alike.
Two Reagan County deputies were injured Sunday night after a law enforcement pursuit of a stolen vehicle ended East of Big Lake near Ball Road. Reagan County Chief Deputy Destin Wilha said Reagan County deputies joined the chase in progress on FM 1555 West of Big Lake as the stolen Ford F-550 was being pursued by Upton County deputies.
Charles Graves, 41 of Big Lake, was arrested and charged with Deadly Conduct - Discharge of a Firearm after an incident early last Thursday morning. The Reagan County Sheriff’s Department responded to reports at around 8:30 a.m. of a man yelling and gunshots being heard around the area of 10th Street and Georgia Avenue in Big Lake.
Big Lake’s Christmas in the Park is set for Wednesday, December 7th at Reagan County’s North Park. The event will kick off with the Lighted Christmas Parade starting at 5:30 p.m.

Porfirio Ortiz, 80 of Big Lake, was arrested and charged with two counts of Capital Murder - Multiple Persons on Wednesday, May 18th. Capital Murder charges carry with them a mandatory life sentence without parole if convicted. The charges stem from a 9-1-1 call the Reagan County Sheriff’s Department received at 3:57 p.m. last Wednesday.
Reagan County Coach Tracy Tatum-Smith (Coach T) was inducted into the Reagan County ISD Hall of Honor last Thursday during Reagan County High School’s Sports Banquet. Coach T has cultivated an exemplary tennis program at Reagan County and touched countless lives since joining the district in 1990.

According to the National Center for Educational Statistics, both Texas and New Mexico rank in the bottom 25th percentile in literacy nationally, with several Permian Basin counties ranking near the bottom of state averages. Through the generous support of the Abell-Hanger Foundation, FMH Foundation, Permian Strategic Partnership, and the Brown Family Foundation; The Literacy Coalition of the Permian Basin (LCPB) was founded in 2021 to address the literacy challenges prevalent in the Permian Basin, which includes nineteen counties in Texas and three in New Mexico, with the mission to increase the literacy levels and skills of all people in the Permian Basin improving their quality of life.
